Combs was born on November 4,1969 in a neighborhood of Upper Manhattan,New York City called Harlem but brought up in Mount Vernon,New York. Growing up he lost his father,Melvin Earl Combs who served in the U.S Air Force and was an associate of a convicted drug dealer when he was just 2. His mother,Janice Combs, a model and a teacher assistant had to work multiple jobs to support Combs and his sister.
In 1987, he graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy, an all-boys Catholic school and also played football for the academy and won a division title in 1986. In the beginning of his rise in the music career, he was an intern in New York’s Uptown Records in 1990. While working,he helped develop Jodeci,an American R&B quartet and Mary J. Blige,an American singer and an actress. mAfter getting fired from Uptown in 1993,he established his own label Bad Boy Records, entered into a joint venture deal with Arista Records. And also brought Uptown signee Christopher Wallace commonly known asNotorious B.I.G. along with him to the newly established label.Craig Mack and Wallace both started recording for the label and gained widespread fame, which resulted in the release of the former’s first album and the company’s first significant project, Ready to Die.
